About Me

LinkedIn Profile Picture

Hello everyone! My name is Lauryn Kenny. If I had to describe my social media presence, it's would probably be more of a lurker. I especially love lurking on Booktok, and most of the content I watch is about writing or reading. I used to have a blog I used as a portfolio. I put all of my past stories on there. I'm currently getting my MLIS degree, and my primary focus is public libraries. I currently have a graduate position where I run Dominican SOIS's Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook pages. You'll usually see me working on a social media post, or if you're a student, you'll see me working on another email about Handshake.

Social media has always been part of my life. I've taken it for granted, and despite being part of the 'social media generation,' I want to learn how to apply it to my career. I mostly use Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and LinkedIn. For my job, I usually use Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook.

I would love to learn how to use AI effectively. Although I was initially skeptical, librarians and educators learning about AI will benefit us. Seeing AI as a tool instead of a replacement made me feel better about using it. I would really like it if this course delved into AI usage.

I received my Bachelor's in English from Millikin University and have a minor in publishing/editing. At Millikin, I learned how to design websites and publish stories. I am passionate about books, writing, and the power of the written word. Communication and freedom of expression are essential to me, whether in a blog post or a full-length novel. It's one of the reasons why I want to be a librarian.

I have a 6-7-month-old golden retriever puppy named Quinn. She is highly time-consuming, but she's so sweet and lovely. I'll post some pictures of her on this blog someday. She's graduating from doggy school, so please wish her luck!

I'm excited about this class. I would love to learn how to use different social media accounts. I hope this class is enjoyable and engaging. I'm excited to meet everyone and look at their blogs!

  1. Hi Lauryn!
I completely agree that AI is a tool that can enhance, rather than replace, the incredible work librarians and educators do. I didn't know much about AI before I took my last two grad classes, and it inspired me to look into what AI tools are available to first graders. I was able to pilot Project Read AI with my students and found the "tutor" to be very helpful in helping me reach all my students' needs.
Also, Quinn sounds adorable. Congrats to her on graduating from doggy school! I look forward to seeing those pictures and wish you the best in this class.

  2. Hi Lauryn! My roommate in college used to post on Booktok. She would post her ideal cast to different books and give honest reviews of less popular books. I always find that my ratings of the books are different than the ratings I see on Booktok though. Do you have the same issue? My AP seminar class is currently testing a new AI feature for the college board that gives feedback to students. It is pretty cool being one of the first classes to get to try it. I grew up with golden retrievers my entire life. I must see a picture of Quinn! I have been begging my partner to get a golden retriever for probably the past year. I already have the same picked out.

    1. Hi Anna! I do have the same issue. I'll get a Booktok recommendation, and I'll feel like I'm the only one that either likes it or dislikes it. It's kind of interesting. I'll also take show a picture of Quinn sometime!

  3. What a fun job, Lauryn! Thanks for sharing your view on social media. Having a job in communications, I can understand 'lurking' more than posting in your personal time. Have you seen the National Park Service's social media accounts?! They have a great vibe. Looking forward to learning with you this spring!

  4. Hey Lauryn! Your background in social media management and passion for libraries make for a fascinating combination! It’s great to see your openness to AI and its potential in librarianship, I agree that viewing AI as a tool rather than a replacement is key. Your experience with publishing, editing, and website design will surely be valuable in this class, and I look forward to seeing how you integrate those skills with social media. Also, best of luck to Quinn on her doggy school graduation, she sounds adorable!

Personality Quizzes: What Am I?

Personality tests were all the rage in high school and college. I remember taking the 16 personality tests, Buzzfeed quizzes, and leadership tests during my free time. Although I was highly skeptical about their legitimacy, something about them comforted me. I felt like I was a part of a group. My introversion was a strength. My rigidity and sensitivity were something to uphold instead of a source of shame. My shyness isn’t a problem; I just have a different set of skills.       After taking a couple and questioning my existence, I realized how similar they all were. They asked the same questions, but it was difficult to differentiate which one mattered. I would like to know if I would get a different response if I took the same tests on other days. Is there scientific data supporting the idea that these tests will help determine your leadership skills? Fortunately, there is no limit to the number of times you can take a test, so I decided ...

Laws and Teenage Drama

Thirteen is such a strange year. You’re not exactly a child, but you aren’t an adult either. You’re in this awkward, strange phase that makes you believe everyone is looking at you. The most important thing that matters is how people see you, and well, what’s more captivating to a teenager than an app that is all about yourself?  I remember begging my parents to get me a Facebook page when I was younger. I wasn’t thirteen yet, but I was only one more month away from the most important birthday of my life. I would be thirteen—a teenager, older and wiser beyond my years. I was old enough to use multiple social media accounts, not just Facebook. These sites opened a new world for me. I was finally going to be taken seriously. I’m not a child anymore; I’m a responsible person with a Facebook account.  After making these accounts, I waited for the change. I waited to see if I was, in fact, an adult. I stood at the foot of my bed, waiting for this moment of clarity. It didn’t...
