My Process:
When I first started this project, I had a passion for helping people with disabilities, but I wasn't sure how to apply that to this class. I want to be a librarian, and I wanted to know how I would use what I have learned in this classroom. After learning about different learning theories and different types of technology, I was excited about my proposal.
Like with any proposal, my process had highs and lows. One aspect I was worried about was the financial costs and the lack of care for adults with disabilities. Adults with disabilities are an underrepresented population. My library was terrific, but I was concerned about pushback. Talking to the Inclusion Librarian eased my fears, and it was an overall exciting and positive experience. The worry about money, however, is still prevalent throughout my process. Despite the Elmhurst Public Library being well-funded, I'm hesitant to express my opinions because of the potential cost of my proposal.
A theory prevalent throughout my proposal and process is Social Constructivism. This theory holds that social interaction enhances learning. According to Social Constructivism Overview, knowledge is "constructed through interactions in the environment" (2014). Without giving the tools to communicate, it can be difficult for patrons with intellectual disabilities to interact with libraries, other patrons, and staff. My proposal aligns with this theory because providing tools and technology for patrons to communicate with enhances their experience at the library. With this project, I hope that it helps my patrons learn and grow at my library.
Overall, I am incredibly excited about my project and hope for the best. I believe it has potential, and it will significantly benefit the Elmhurst Public Library.
